Though actually, the name was a woman’s name first. The city was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, when the colony was founded in the 1830s. The name came into English from French Adélaïde, and before that from Old High German Adalheid: adal “noble” plus heit “nature, character,” so something like “noble sort.” The same old German name, travelling another road, also gave English Alice.
Though actually不過其實,the name was a woman's name first這個名字原本是一個女性的名字。The city was named after Queen Adelaide這座城市是以Queen Adelaide的名字命名的, wife of King William IV她是威廉四世國王的妻子, when the colony was founded in the 1830s那是在1830年代殖民地建立的時候。The name came into English from French Adélaïde這個名字是從法文Adélaïde進入英文的, and before that from Old High German Adalheid而在那之前來自古高地德文Adalheid:adal "noble" plus heit "nature, character,"adal是「高貴」,加上heit「性質、特質」, so something like "noble sort."所以大概是「高貴的一種」的意思。The same old German name, travelling another road, also gave English Alice同一個古德文名字走了另一條路,也給了英文Alice這個名字。
