A hedonist is someone who believes that pleasure is the most important thing in life, or who lives as if it were. In careful talk, it means a person who follows hedonism as a belief. In ordinary talk, it often means someone who chases comfort, food, drink, and fun, and does not worry much about rules. It can sound judging, as if the speaker thinks that person is selfish. Though actually, people also use it lightly, almost as a joke: “I’m a hedonist at the weekend” may only mean they like a long lunch. The word is not a swear word, but in a serious sentence it is rarely a compliment. Use hedonist for the person; use hedonism for the idea; use hedonistic when you need an adjective in front of a noun (a hedonistic lifestyle).
