Heckling is the interrupting itself — the shouts, jokes, and rude calls from the crowd while someone is speaking or performing in public, meant to them or put them off. A news story may talk about heckling at a rally; a comedian may say the heckling got out of hand. It can be one outburst or a whole evening of it. You will also see heckling as the -ing form of the verb: they were heckling the minister. The tone is informal to neutral. Though actually, a hard question from the floor is not automatically heckling; heckling is there to needle, not to learn.
