The Hebrides are a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland. People split them into the Inner Hebrides, nearer the mainland, and the Outer Hebrides, a chain farther out in the Atlantic. You always say the Hebrides, with the, and the name is plural: the Hebrides are wild in winter. Well-known islands in the group include Skye, Mull, , Lewis, and Harris. English uses the name for the place, not as a verb or a casual adjective — for “from there” you switch to . The islands are known for rough sea weather, sheep, Harris , and Scottish . Though actually, the “ri” in the spelling is probably an old copying mistake: earlier Latin wrote something more like Hebudes or Haebudes.
組成From Latin Hebudes or Haebudes; the u was likely turned to ri by a scribe’s error. The earlier origin is unknown — perhaps Pre-Celtic, or perhaps Proto-Celtic *boudi. Ancient Greek Héboudai, islands mentioned by Ptolemy and Pliny, are likely the same group.
