Hebridean is the word for people and things that belong to the — the group of islands off the west coast of Scotland. That group has two parts: the Inner , closer to the mainland (islands such as Skye and Mull), and the Outer , a long chain farther out in the Atlantic (including Lewis and Harris). A Hebridean is a person from those islands; a Hebridean ferry, Hebridean wool, or Hebridean weather is of that place. It is a fairly formal, map-and-textbook word. In casual talk people often just say “from the ” or name the island. Though actually, because the islands are famous for wind, sea, and speech, “Hebridean” in writing often carries a remote, weather-beaten picture, not a city one.
