Hebridean is the word for people and things that belong to the Hebrides — the group of islands off the west coast of Scotland. That group has two parts: the Inner Hebrides, closer to the mainland (islands such as Skye and Mull), and the Outer Hebrides, a long chain farther out in the Atlantic (including Lewis and Harris). A Hebridean is a person from those islands; a Hebridean ferry, Hebridean wool, or Hebridean weather is of that place. It is a fairly formal, map-and-textbook word. In casual talk people often just say “from the Hebrides” or name the island. Though actually, because the islands are famous for wind, sea, and Gaelic speech, “Hebridean” in writing often carries a remote, weather-beaten picture, not a city one.
