A heath is a wide, open piece of land, especially in Britain, where the soil is poor and rather dry. You do not get thick forest there. You get grass, low bushes, and other small plants — often heather. It can feel empty, windy, and a little wild. In stories, a heath is a lonely place. Though actually, heath and moor sit close together, and even British people are not always tidy about the difference. A moor is often wetter and more like high, ground; a heath is often drier and more open. The same word is also a family name, Heath, for people who once lived by such land.

組成Does not split in modern English. It comes from Middle English heth / heeth, from Old English hæþ, an old word for wild, unused land. Dutch heide and German Heide are cousins; they mean the same kind of open land. It is also used as an English surname, from the place.
