Heartrending (also written heart-rending) describes a sight or story that fills you with great pity — it feels as if something is tearing your heart. It is much stronger than sad, and close to . Though actually, heartrending leans toward pity for someone else’s pain: a heartrending cry, a heartrending story. is usually how the sad person themselves feels. You will see heartrending in news and books more than in casual chat; friends may just say It was so sad I couldn’t bear it. Do not use it for a small disappointment, a bad test, or a missed bus. It belongs with real suffering, farewells, and scenes that stay with you. It is a little more literary, even old-fashioned, than , which is the word most people reach for first.
