    A headstone is the piece of stone that stands at a grave, usually at the "head" end, with the dead person's name and dates written on it. Families put one up so the place can be found and the person remembered. and tombstone mean almost the same. Though actually, tombstone can sound a little heavier or more old-fashioned, and a flat plate set in the grass is often called a marker, not a headstone. The word is quiet and serious — cemeteries, funerals, history — not a joke word.
