A headstand is a body position: you turn yourself upside down, put the top of your head and your hands on the floor, and lift your legs into the air. Yoga, gymnastics, and circus use it. People also say "do a headstand." Though actually, your hands and arms should carry a lot of the weight; a safe headstand is not dumping your whole body onto a bent neck. Beginners often practise against a wall. It is a normal sports-and-class word, not a metaphor in everyday talk.
