A headscarf is a square piece of cloth that a woman wears on her head and ties under her chin. It sits on the hair and is under the jaw, so the wind cannot take it. Your grandmother might have worn one on a scooter or on a cold morning; you may have seen the same style in old photos. It is not a neck scarf, and it is not a hat. In careful English, headscarf usually means that tied-under-the-chin square. A covering worn for religion, such as a , is a different word, though some people loosely say headscarf for that too.
