Haymaking is the farm work of cutting long grass and drying it in the sun so it becomes hay. You cut it, leave it to dry, turn it, then take it in and store it. It has to be done in dry weather, or the grass goes bad. That is why English has the saying make hay while the sun shines: do the work while you still can. Though actually, the old picture of people with forks in a field is often machines now, finishing the job in a day. The real meaning is still that grass-drying work; used for any busy “gathering in,” it is a stretch.
