A hawthorn is a small, tough tree. In spring it is covered with small white flowers; later it has little red berries; and all year the branches have sharp points — thorns. In Britain you see it in hedges along fields. The berries are called haws. Though actually, there is more than one kind. The common one in England is also called the May-tree, because it flowers in May. It is a cousin of the Chinese 山楂 used in snacks, not the very same tree, but close enough that the Chinese name still helps you. People also write Hawthorne as a family name; that is a different spelling.
