1. 1

Hawkishness is the name for that hard, military-first way of thinking. If a leader shows hawkishness, they are ready to send troops or threaten force when a political problem appears. It is the same idea as hawkish, but now you are naming the attitude, not describing a person. You will meet it in news and essays more than in everyday speech. Though actually, writers sometimes use it for any tough stance, even when no soldiers are involved — a company’s hawkishness on costs, for example. The heart of the word is still and force.
