    Haven’t is the short form of have not. You use it in speech all the time, and in messages and stories. I haven’t, you haven’t, we haven’t, they haven’t. With he, she, or it, English wants hasn’t, not haven’t. Two common jobs: (1) the present perfect — I haven’t seen her today (not in this time / not yet); (2) with got in British English — I haven’t got a pen (= I don’t have a pen). Though actually “I haven’t a pen” without got is possible in older or very British speech, but are safer with haven’t got or don’t have. In a careful school essay, teachers often prefer have not written in full.
