Hateful means very , cruel, or so unpleasant that it makes people angry or sick of it. A hateful person treats others badly on purpose. Hateful words are meant to hurt. Though actually, we stretch it: a hateful job or a hateful smell is not “full of hate” — it is just really nasty, the kind you wish would stop. So the word does two jobs: “full of hate” and “making people hate it / finding it ugly.” It is a strong word, not a light joke. In news and careful talk now, hateful often describes speech that attacks a group. Formal writing and everyday speech both use it, but it always carries heat.
