A hatband is the strip that runs around a hat, just above the brim — often a ribbon, sometimes leather or cloth. It can help the hat sit well, or it can be there only to look finished and smart. In older times a black hatband was a quiet public sign that you were in mourning. People also tuck a ticket, a small feather, or a fishing fly into a hatband, because it sits where the fingers can find it. The word stays close to the object; nobody really stretches it into a picture of something else. It is an ordinary, slightly old-fashioned thing to name — more at home in a description of a hat than in street talk about caps and beanies.
