    Hartford is the capital city of Connecticut, a small state in the northeast of the United States, in New England. It sits on the Connecticut River. Though actually, many people cannot name it: they know Connecticut from Yale (which is in New Haven) or from being near New York, but the state capital is Hartford. The city has a long history in insurance, and the writer Mark Twain lived there for years. There are other places called Hartford; in a ’s dictionary this is the Connecticut one. A village in , England, has a different name-story (army + ford). The Hartford that means “deer ford” is hart + ford: a shallow place in a river where deer could cross.
