If something is harrowing, it is so , cruel, or sad that it leaves you shaken and upset — a harrowing film, a harrowing story, a harrowing wait for news. It is a strong word. You would not use it for something only a little scary. The picture underneath is the farm harrow tearing up the ground: the feeling is of being torn up inside. Though actually, in older church art and literature you may also meet “the Harrowing of Hell,” a story of Christ going into Hell after the crucifixion. That is the same family of meaning — to raid, to tear through — not a different word. The everyday adjective is the shocking, upsetting one.
