A harrow is a farm machine with sharp metal teeth or discs, pulled over a field to break up the earth after ploughing, smash lumps of soil, pull up weeds, and make the ground fine enough to plant. Farmers also use it as a verb: they harrow a field when they do this job.
A harrow耙 is a farm machine是一種農具,with sharp metal teeth or discs裝有尖銳的金屬齒或圓盤,pulled over a field被拖過田地,to break up the earth after ploughing用來把犁過的土打散、smash lumps of soil打碎土塊、pull up weeds拔除雜草,and讓 make the ground fine enough to plant使土壤細到可以播種。Farmers also use it as a verb農夫也把它當動詞用:when they do this job做這件事的時候,they harrow a field就說是harrow a field(耙田)。
Though actually, the same spelling has a second, more verb: to harrow someone is to distress them badly, as if their feelings were being torn up the way the tool tears the ground.
Though actually不過其實,the same spelling同樣的拼法 has a second, more bookish verb還有第二個比較書面的動詞用法:to harrow someone把某人harrow is to distress them badly是指讓他們非常痛苦,as if their feelings were being torn up就好像他們的感受被撕裂一樣,the way the tool tears the ground就像這個工具撕裂土地那樣。
On a farm, harrow still means the soil machine.
On a farm在農場上,harrow這個字 still means仍然是指 the soil machine那台耙土的機器。
Do not mix it up with Harrow (capital H), a place in London and a famous school — that is a name, not the tool.
Do not mix it up with不要把它跟 Harrow (capital H)大寫的Harrow 搞混,a place in London and a famous school那是倫敦的一個地方,也是一所有名的學校——that is a name, not the tool那是個名字,不是這個工具。
組成From Middle English harwe / harow, from Old English *hearwa or from Old Norse harfr / herfi (compare Danish harve “harrow”, Dutch hark “rake”). Distantly akin to Latin carpere, “to pluck”. The farm verb comes from the tool. The OED says the “upset someone” verb is partly from the tool and partly a by-form of harry, “to raid and attack”. A link with harvest is only a perhaps; do not treat it as sure.
