A hard-hitting report, speech, or film says what is wrong in strong, clear words, and it lands — people feel the hit. Newspapers, reviews, and speeches love this word, and they usually mean it as praise: the piece is brave and does not water things down. A hard-hitting story names the problem; a shy, careful apology is the opposite. Though actually, this is almost always about words and ideas, not about fists. The old picture is hitting hard, like a boxer, but in everyday English the point is that the criticism is sharp and it works, not that someone is shouting. You would not call a rude insult hard-hitting just because it is loud. The word is at home in news English.
