A hank is an amount of wool, yarn, or thread wound into a loose coil or bundle, not pulled tight like a hard ball of string. Knitters and people who work with yarn still use it: you buy wool in hanks, then wind it into a ball before you knit. It is a quiet, practical word, more at home in a craft shop than in everyday chat. People also stretch it a little to a loose coil of hair — a hank of hair. There is a verb too, to hank, meaning to wind something into hanks, but mostly meet the noun. Though actually, Hank with a capital H is a nickname for the name Henry; that is a different word that only shares the sound.
組成From Middle English hank, from a Scandinavian word for a coil or something bent (Old Norse hǫnk), related to an old Germanic word for a hook, and akin to the old verb meaning to hang. Known since the 14th century.
