In this sense, hammered means very drunk — not a little , but properly gone. It is informal, almost slang, and you hear it from young people and in casual talk: we got hammered last night. You would not write it in a school essay or say it to a unless you were being cheeky. It has the feel of having been hit hard, which is probably why the word transferred; you can still use hammered in its older, plainer way (hammered metal, a roof hammered by rain), but when a person ‘is hammered’, listeners almost always take the drink meaning first. It is a bit rougher than drunk, and a bit more than wasted, depending on the mouth it comes from.
