A hallucination is a sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch that feels real but is not there — or the experience of that happening. Hearing a voice when nobody is speaking, or seeing a person who is not in the room, are typical examples. Doctors use the word with illness, high fever, no sleep, or drugs. Though actually, it is not the same as an illusion: an illusion is a real thing that looks wrong, like a stick that looks bent in water. And it is not quite a delusion, which is a false idea you keep believing. Everyday talk sometimes stretches it — “that cake was a hallucination” — to mean it looked too good to be true. That is play, not the medical sense.
組成From hallucinate + -ion, from Latin hallucinatus. The ending -ion turns the verb into a noun for the act or the result.
