Hake is a long, lean sea fish with white flesh, sold as food — often in fillets, fish and chips, or baked dishes. It is a cousin of the cod family in the kitchen sense (mild, flaky white fish), though it is its own fish. You meet the word on menus and in shops more than in everyday chat, unless someone is talking about fishing. It is not hawk (the bird) and not hack (to cut). Cooks like it because it is milder and often cheaper than cod. Though actually, in some shops the label “white fish” hides the exact name, so you may eat hake without seeing the word.
無需鱈(市面上有時直接稱鱈魚,但真正的鱈魚是另一種)
組成The fish name is old. One line traces it to Middle English and an old word for “hook” (hake have a jaw that looks a bit like a hook), related to English hook. Another line says it was probably shortened, under North Germanic influence, from dialect haked, a kind of pike. Scholars do not all pick the same story.
