    The haj is the pilgrimage to (also spelled ) in Saudi Arabia that Muslims try to make at least once in a lifetime if they can. It is one of the five great duties of Islam. It happens in a set month, with set days and rites — walking around the , standing at Arafat, and other steps done with a huge crowd of people from many countries. You will also see the spelling hajj, which is very common in English; haj is the same journey. It is a religious word, used with respect, not a casual “trip.” A holiday or a tourist visit to Saudi Arabia is not the haj.
