Haiti is a country in the Caribbean Sea. It sits on the western part of the island of ; the Dominican Republic has the eastern part. The capital is Port-au-Prince. The land is mountainous — the old Taíno name, hayiti, is usually explained as “land of high mountains” or high burial mounds. Haiti was the first Black republic in the Americas (it broke from France in the early 1800s). French and Creole are the main languages. For a long time it was ruled by the Duvalier family — François “Papa Doc,” then his son Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” — before elected governments, later coups, and long stretches of trouble. It is often named in the news for poverty, storms, and the huge 2010 earthquake. That is the country people mean; it is not Hawaii.
組成From Taíno hayiti, “land of lofty barrows or mountains,” once the native name for the whole island of Hispaniola. English took the name for the western country.
