The haft is the handle of an axe, a knife, or another hand weapon — the part you hold, usually wood, fitted to the head or blade. It is a rather old or craft word; in everyday talk people often just say handle. There is also a verb: to haft a blade is to fit it with a handle. Do not stretch it to mean any long pole; that is closer to shaft.
組成From Middle English haft, from Old English hæft, from Proto-West Germanic *haftī, from Proto-Germanic *haftiją. It has long meant the handle you hold. The verb is the same word used as an action: to fit a haft onto a blade.
