1. 1

Haematology is the scientific study of blood: what blood is made of, how it works, and what goes wrong with it — , clotting problems, blood cancers, and the like. A doctor in this field is a haematologist. In a hospital, haematology can also name the department that does this work and reads blood tests. The first part, haemat- or haemo-, comes from the Greek word for blood. The ending -ology means “the study of.” Though actually, you will also see hematology, without the ae. That is the usual American spelling. Haematology is the British spelling. In Taiwan, English medical writing often follows the American form, but they are the same word, not two subjects.
