A hacktivist is a person who breaks into computer systems for political or social reasons. They are a kind of hacker, but the point is the cause: protest, leaking papers, taking down a site, or leaving a message, rather than stealing money. The word is a blend of hack and activist. It was coined in 1994 by a member of a hacker group called the Cult of the Dead Cow. The activity they do is . Though actually, people use hacker for almost anyone who breaks into computers, and then hacktivist gets used as a nicer-sounding label. A thief who only wants money is not a hacktivist, even if they are skilled. It is a news and tech word, not an everyday one. The law often does not care about the cause: breaking in can still be a crime.
