An activist is someone who works, in practical ways, to push social or political change — not only talking, but organising, marching, writing, showing up. You can be a climate activist, a human-rights activist, a community activist. The word sits on active: this person is active about a cause. Newspapers use it as a label, almost like a job. People who do the work may say it with pride; others sometimes use it as a slight, as if activist meant “too loud, too political.” It is not a rude word in itself, but the feeling around it depends who is speaking. Though actually, it is not just “an active person” — someone who plays sport or stays busy. That is a different idea. An activist has a cause.
