Guyana is a country on the north-east coast of South America, on the Atlantic Ocean. Venezuela is to the west; is to the east. The capital is Georgetown.
It used to belong to Britain, and its old name was British Guiana. That is why English is the official language — it is the only English-speaking country on the South American mainland. Many people there also speak Creole in daily life.
About three-quarters of a million people lived there around 2014; the number has grown since. The land has forests, rivers, and a low coast.
Do not mix it up with Ghana in Africa, or with Guinea, or with French Guiana, a neighbour that is still tied to France.
組成From an Indigenous American language, probably Cariban or Lokono, said to be a word referring to the land’s waters.
