If someone is gushing, they praise you, or show how pleased they are, in a way that other people think is too much — too many kind words, too much feeling, so it can sound a little embarrassing, or not quite calm and true. A gushing review, a gushing thank-you, a gushing host. The picture underneath is water bursting out and not stopping. You can still use gushing for real liquid — a gushing wound, gushing water from a pipe — but the sense here is the talk-and-feeling one, and it is slightly critical. You would not usually call your own words gushing. Younger speakers still use it this way; it has not gone out of fashion, though it does sound a bit like a comment from the side, not a kind compliment.
