Gunpowder is the explosive powder that makes guns fire, bombs burst, and many go up. The old kind — black powder — is a mix of charcoal, sulfur, and , and it smokes a lot; modern smokeless powders in cartridges are different chemistry, but everyday English still calls the stuff that shoots a gun gunpowder. It smells sharp when it burns. Armies store it; festivals pack it into ; history books say it changed war. It was first made in China, then spread. It is usually uncountable: some gunpowder, a barrel of gunpowder. Though actually, gunpowder tea is not this: that is green tea rolled into little pellets that look a bit like grains of powder.
