A gunfight is a fight in which people shoot guns at each other. It is usually short, loud, and between a small number of people — two men in a street, a few people outside a bank — not a whole war. You hear it a lot in stories about the American West, and in crime films: two sides, guns drawn, someone falls. Though actually, people also stretch it a little: a “gunfight” in the news can be a shooting between police and criminals, even if it is messy and not a tidy duel. It is a countable noun: one gunfight, two gunfights. There is a verb, to gunfight, but you will meet the noun far more. The fight is the gunfight; the noise and the shooting are gunfire; the person is a gunfighter.
