A custodian is a person who takes care of and looks after something, keeping it safe. In American English, this word is often used for the person who cleans and maintains a school or office building (elsewhere you might hear "janitor" or "caretaker" for the same job). It's also used more formally for someone legally responsible for looking after property, money, or even a child — "the custodian of the museum's art collection," or in family law, the parent or adult a court names to care for a child.
