1. 1

A grubstake is money given to someone so they can start a new piece of work — a business, or, in the old American West, a search for gold. The person who gives the money gets a share of the profit if the work succeeds. The word is a picture: grub is a casual word for food, and a stake is the money you put in. At first a grubstake was food and a little cash to keep a miner alive while he dug. People still use it, mostly in American English, for the same kind of deal in other businesses. It sounds a bit old and , not like a bank word. You can also use it as a verb: a grubstaked the miners.
