Picture glass being rubbed away. The word ground is not the earth here; it is what grind leaves behind, so both uses of the term start with the same action and differ only in how far it went. Stop at the surface and you get a that has lost its smooth face: light still comes through, the view does not. Keep going, and there is no left at all, only fine grains in a bag. One question tells you which one a sentence means - was the glass rubbed, or was it rubbed away?
