A groomsman is a friend — or a , or a cousin — of the man getting married, with special jobs on the wedding day. He is not the groom. He may wear a matching suit, stand beside him, walk with a bridesmaid, look after guests, and help the day run. There are often several groomsmen. The chief one is usually called the best man — and though actually the best man is a groomsman too, he is just the lead one, with extra jobs and usually a speech. In American English groomsman is the ordinary word. In Britain people often say usher for the same kind of , though groomsman is understood. The matching word on the bride’s side is bridesmaid. The groom inside this word is the wedding groom, not someone who brushes a horse, and not someone brushing their hair.
