A bridegroom is the man who is getting married, on the wedding day or just after. In ordinary talk people usually it to groom: “the bride and groom.” Bridegroom sounds a little more old-fashioned or formal — you still see it on invitations and in stories. Though actually, the ending is a bit of a : it looks like the groom who looks after horses, but that is not how the word began. The old second half just meant “man,” then died out, and people reshaped the ending to a word they still knew. Today both spellings point at the same wedding role; horse-groom is a different job that only shares the look.
組成From Old English brȳdguma: brȳd (bride) + guma (man). The old word guma died out, so people changed the ending to groom (a young man or attendant they still knew). That folk story stuck in the spelling; the “horse” groom is not the real parent of this word, even though they now look the same.
