In English, a grenadier is often a soldier in a famous British army group, the Grenadier Guards. They are the ones in red coats and tall black hats at palaces, and they are real fighting soldiers too, not only for show. The name is older than that job. Hundreds of years ago, grenadiers were the strong men whose work was to throw grenades. Armies later kept the name for special foot soldiers even when throwing those bombs was no longer the daily job. So the tidy school picture is “a British guard in a tall hat”; the longer truth is “a soldier whose name still remembers the grenade.”
