Greenpeace is an international group that works to protect the environment. It is not a government and not the United Nations. Its members are known for going out and doing something public, not only writing reports: they take their own boats to try to stop nuclear-weapon tests, to stop companies pouring poison into the sea, and to try to stop the killing of whales and other sea animals. The name is simply green (here: the living world, the environment) plus peace. People say the name with respect, with , or as a shorthand for a certain kind of loud, camera-ready protest; the group itself is large, organised, and has offices in many countries. In news talk it is treated as a proper name, always with a capital G.
