A sound that happens gratingly is hard, rough, and unpleasant — metal on metal, or a chair pulled across a floor. People also stretch it: a voice, a laugh, or a smile can be gratingly loud or gratingly cheerful. Then you do not mean a tool ; you mean the sound or the manner rubs you the wrong way. It is a critical word, not a compliment.
