Grasmere is both a lake and a small village in the Lake District, in the northwest of England — hill country famous for lakes, rain, and walking. The village sits beside the lake. From 1799 to 1808 the poet William Wordsworth lived there in a house called Dove Cottage, and a great many tourists still come to walk the shore and to see where he wrote. It is a real place on the map, not a made-up name in a poem; though actually, the poems are why so many people know the place at all. Say GRASS-mere, with the weight on the first part. We treat it as a name: you visit Grasmere; you do not say “a grasmere”.
