A way of marching used by some armies: each leg swings up high and straight, and the knee does not bend. From a distance it can look a little like a goose walking, which is how the name was built — goose plus step. You will see it in old films of military parades. Though actually, in English this is not a neutral drill word. It is strongly tied to the German army of the twentieth century and to other strict, showy armies, so it can sound political, cold, or mocking. People also use it as a verb: the soldiers goosestepped across the square. Writers sometimes stretch it to mean following orders blindly, like a machine, not thinking for yourself.
