    A gondolier is someone whose job is to take people for rides in a gondola — the long, narrow black boat you see on the canals of Venice, in Italy. The gondolier stands at the back and drives the boat with a long oar, not with a motor. It is skilled, old work; the striped shirt and straw hat belong more to the tourist picture than to everyday local life. The word came into English from Italian gondoliere, through French gondolier. Though actually, English gondola also names the hanging cabin on a ski lift or an , but a gondolier is only the Venice . Nobody calls the ski-lift operator a gondolier.
