A goldfish is a small fish that people keep in a bowl, a tank, or a garden pond. The ones in shops are usually orange or gold-orange and a bit shiny — that colour, not the metal gold, is why they are called goldfish. They are a kind of carp. People in East Asia raised them for their colour hundreds of years ago, and they later became common pets in Europe too. Some stay small in a bowl; in a pond they can grow much larger. Fancy kinds may have big eyes or long flowing tails, but the ordinary orange fish is the picture most English speakers have. People also joke that someone has a goldfish memory, from the old story that a goldfish forgets things in a few seconds — though actually that story is not true; goldfish can remember for much longer. The word is everyday and informal. It is not the same as koi, a bigger carp for ponds.
