Something gold-plated is not solid gold. It is another metal — often cheaper — with a thin layer of gold on the outside. , taps, and old watches are sometimes gold-plated so they look expensive. Shops and product labels use it in a straight, factual way. The gold can wear off with time, which solid gold does not. Though actually, people also stretch it: a gold-plated pension or plan means extra-rich, more than you strictly need, as if it had gold on top. That second use lives in news and office talk. For the thing you can hold, gold-plated still means the thin coat, not a full-gold piece.
