    To goggle is to look with your eyes very wide open, usually because you are surprised, shocked, or cannot quite believe what you are seeing. You goggle at something. It is a casual, picture-like word — more a story word than the word you use every day at school. Stare is the plain word; goggle adds the round, stunned eyes. Though actually, in the old meaning the eyes were rolling or looking sideways, not only staring straight ahead. Today people mostly mean the wide, frozen look.

組成From 14th-century Middle English gogelen, to roll the eyes or to look sideways. Where that older word came from, nobody now knows. The noun is from the 17th century. Irish gog, a nod or a slight motion, is sometimes set beside it, but that is only a comparison.
