Godliness is the name for a way of living: you try to obey God and lead a good life. In church, teachers use this word a lot. It is not only “being nice.” The idea is that your days — how you treat people, how you keep your word, how you pray — all belong to God. Though actually, outside church many people hardly say it. When they do, they may just mean “a good, clean life,” and the God part sits quietly in the background. It is a serious, old-sounding noun, more at home in a sermon than in a text message.
