Godless describes a person, a group, or a place that does not honour God, or that does not believe in a god. A godless person may say there is no God, or may live as if God does not matter. A preacher might call a city godless if few people pray or go to church, or if the speaker thinks the city’s ways are wicked. That last use is the messy part. In careful talk, godless can simply mean “without God” or “not believing.” In angry or old-fashioned talk, it is an insult: not just “you do not share my faith,” but “you have no moral compass.” It is a serious, rather bookish or sermon-like word, not a playground joke. People who do not believe in God often prefer words like atheist, because godless can sound like a charge against their character, not a calm label for their view.
